m. ward - Vincent Obrien

He only sings when he’s sad
But he’s sad all the time, so he sings the whole night through
Yeah, he sings in the day-time, too

He only dreams when he’s sad
And he’s sad all the time, so he dreams the whole night through
Yeah, he dreams in the day-time, too

There may be mermaids under the water
There may even be a man in the moon
But Vincent, time is running out
You better get yourself together soon

Out of Buffalo, the man
Below the belt, he swung, and then after the bell has rung
Another cheap shot, here it comes

Another cheap shot, here it comes

He only laughs when he’s sad
And he’s sad all the time, so he laughs the whole night through
Yeah, he laughs in the daytime, too

There may be mermaids under the water
There may even be a man in the moon
But Vincent, time is running out
I hope you get yourself together soon

I hope you get yourself together soon

This song will always hold a special place in my heart.

Villain

Dastardly - Villain

Thanks to @jamesfritzcomic for telling me about this band.  I really hope they make it out to Colorado this year.

tUnE-yArDs - Gangsta (live)

I can’t enough of this song.  Try and find the studio recording and get ready to have your mind blown by how well she performs this live.

So Tune-Yards and St. Vincent are doing a few shows together… I can’t wait to see video of them doing a song together.

The Features - Exhibit A
Live from the Mercy Lounge in Nashville, TN

I saw this band at this exact venue back in… um… 2005?  They put on one of the best live shows I’ve ever seen.  I miss seeing them.  Here’s hoping they come to Denver this year.

Beats Antique - Dope Crunk

This band is awesome.  I hope we get to see them this year.

Music I listened to in 2011

M83 - Hurry Up We’re Dreaming

I just happened to be on Spotify the day this was added.  One of the best new albums of the year.  Listen to “Raconte-Moi Une Histoire” and try not to be in a good mood.

Maps & Atlases
I’ve been using Last.Fm’s scrobbler thing for a while now… it tweets my most listened to artists each week.  A random person on twitter saw my tweet and mentioned that I should check out Maps & Atlases.  Thanks to Spotify I was able to listen to everything by them.  I immediately fell in love.  Indie-math-folk-rock… are you kidding?!

Mogwai - Special Moves
When I visited Andy in Denver back in May we listened to this a few times.  It’s an album I can get lost in.  I heart Mogwai.

Ra Ra Riot
Before this year I had only listened to one or two songs by Ra Ra Riot.  For whatever reason I never gave them a chance… until my friend Jessica won tickets and asked me to go see them live at the Earth House Collective in Indy.  For the 2-3 weeks prior to the show I listened to everything by them ad nasuem.  Such a fun band to see live… all of them seem to be loving every second of playing… which is the best.

Soft Skills
I can’t say enough how hard it is for me to believe I’m friends with these guys.  It’s pretty awesome when some of your best friends in the world make some of your favorite music.  I love $$$$ start to finish.  I have serious ants in the pants for the next EP.  I’ve heard most of it and I have to say with each song they get better and better.  LISTEN TO THEM.

Anamanaguchi
Bit-core at it’s finest.  I listened to them a lot while Bethany was in the hospital.  They really helped me stay positive through all of that.

The National
In 2010 Bobby and I worked in the same building and would take lunch breaks together frequently.  He was always listening to the National and telling me how great they were.  For whatever reason I didn’t get around to listening to them until January.  I had a mix CD with Anamanaguchi and The National (because that makes sense)… like previously mentioned, it helped me thru a difficult time.  ”Mistaken for Strangers” continues to be one of my favorite songs of all time.  I heart some good old fashioned bummer-core.

St Vincent - Strange Mercy
Simply put, Annie Clark is incredible.  Strange Mercy was the most anticipated album of the year for me.  It delivered.  ”Cheerleader” and “Chloe in the Afternoon” are probably my favorite tracks on the record… granted, like any good album, my favorite song changes with my mood.  Bethany and I saw her in Minneapolis and then a week later with Bobby in St. Louis.  She puts on one hell of a show.  Can’t wait to see what she does next.

Daft Punk - Tron Legacy Soundtrack
Tron: Legacy was so much fun… and much like BSG, the music made it that much better.  It wasn’t until a few months ago that I checked out the Reconfigured soundtrack.  Good stuff.  I love anything that reminds me of Dragon*Con.

Watch the Throne
I’ve been listening to this album since the second it came out.  I’ve always enjoyed Kanye and Jay-Z, but I was always more of a singles guy.  We’ve been pretty obsessed with listening to this as much as possible.  Short of “Made in America” and “New Day”, the album is perfect.  N*ggas in Paris is easily one of the best tracks of the year.  ”Why I Love You” and “Illest Motherfucker Alive” never get old to me.  I’ll never forget Bethany, Josh and I singing “OHHHHHH I LOVE YOU SO” at Dragon*Con while waiting for the elevators.  I really hope the rumors of a second Throne album next year are true.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention Skrillex and Soulja Boy.  I’m not proud of it, but we have a lot of silly memories involving them both.  HOP UP OUTTA BED, I’M AT DRAGONCON!

It was a good year of music listening for me.  I’m very much looking forward to 2012…. mainly for the new Dirty Projectors album (and hopefully a tour).

Maps & Atlases - Everyplace Is A House (Live at Reggie’s)

Thanks random person who tweeted me and told me to listen to this band.  They have since become one of my favorite bands of all time.

M83 - Midnight City

This was Pitchfork’s #1 track of the year.  I suppose I’m at least 5/9th’s hipster since I loved most of the tracks on the list.
